Woodford Virgins
by Joanne Schoenwald
It is Boxing Day, and five friends have arrived for one week of camping in an old cow paddock at the annual Woodford Folk Festival. It will be a week of fire twirling, juggling, art lessons, circus entertainment, live music, tribal colours, exotic smells, wild hair, funny hats and a serious lack of condoms. Maybe it will be a week of soul rejuvenation, or maybe it will be a week of terrifying experiences to drag them from their comfort zones.
Against the backdrop of fun and frivolity, there are personal dramas and challenges for each friend. For Tamarind, the hippie, returning ‘home’ to her beloved festival, there is a lingering question about her future as she waits for blood test results. Jeremy is seeking to reclaim his spirit after a broken heart, and open up his third eye chakra in the process. His conservative brother, Andrew, is a cranky, sweating lawyer who just wants to get a relationship right for once — or at least just get laid. Irish backpacker Rose is here to escape a scandal in her hometown of Doolin. And shy, frightened Marmalade is just trying to find the courage to read her poems and discover her voice in a place that is another world from her sensible life.
Love complications abound when the group meets Mike, a performer who plays African drums. Rose is confident in her ability to seduce anyone. Tamarind questions whether or not she should really be pursuing a relationship at this time when her own future seems so uncertain. And Andrew is convinced he has found the real thing this time in Rose. Meanwhile, Marmalade has to come to terms with her family’s unfinished business and Jeremy starts to suspect that his relationship with his brother might not be what he thought it was.
As the week closes and New Year’s Eve wishes float softly as ashes into the night sky, one will find love, one will find forgiveness, one will find passion, one will find humility and one will find that they have much more to find.
Woodford Virgins is a novel about friendship, romance and faith, and our ability to be tested and come back stronger, more loving, and more joyful than ever. It is a feel-good story for all ages — regardless of whether or not you have dreadlocks and drink chai!
